French Cyber Campus Transfer Program (France 2030) - "FACEPAD 3D project"
Funded as part of the French National Strategy for Cybersecurity, the PTCC or Cyber Campus Transfer Program supports the development of a skills and technology transfer dynamic between academic research players and cybersecurity companies.
Biometrics consists in identifying or verifying an individual's identity based on morphological or behavioral characteristics. Facial recognition is a widely used solution in many applications, including identity verification for logical and physical access control, border control, mobile payment, etc. Of all the possible attacks on biometric systems (interception of communications, alteration of databases, falsification of verification results, etc.), presentation attacks are the easiest to implement and therefore the most dangerous. This type of attack consists in presenting the sensor with falsified biometric data (paper printout, mask, video on digital tablet) aimed at altering its operation (identity theft or masking).
The FACEPAD 3D project aims at developing a 3D facial recognition system that natively integrates a new approach to presentation attack detection. The approach combines hardware (sensors) and software (deep learning) elements for the detection of complex attacks including 3D masks.
